Last month, I got to tag along on one of Christy’s business trips to Paris. I’ve been so busy that I just got around to processing the photos. They’re posted in the gallery.

In addition to seeing most of the main touristy attractions in Paris, we also took a day trip out to Versailles. Highlights of that day included getting on the wrong train and riding it out in to the suburbs north of the city. It wasn’t a bad trip, and we got to see a little more of the country, but by the time we got to Versailles, our “arrive early” approach had failed, and we spent a lot of time in crowded lines that day. Being the cultured person that I am, my astute impression of the palace is that the French nobility had WAY too many bedrooms.

It was my first time visiting France, and I had a good time. The food and wine were both very very good. The weather was cold, and at least one of the days was fairly drizzly, so we ended up spending a lot of time drinking in cafes. Not bad. I also had just recently injured my back, so I ended up being a big fan of riding in a boat around the Seine. I also found their subway system relatively easy to handle once you figure out that the doors on the train cars don’t open automatically.

Once I got used to being a little more formal with the French language (everybody expects you to address them as Monsieur or Madame), I realized that they were not really as nasty to Americans as I expected them to be. In general, I’m starting to figure out a lot of the perceived problems that Americans have when traveling overseas are usually related to the fact that those particular Americans are themselves the problem.
